Elisabeth of Hungary, Duchess of Bavaria

Elisabeth of Hungary (1236 – 24 October 1271) was a daughter of Béla IV of Hungary and his wife Maria Laskarina. She was a member of the Árpád dynasty.

Family

Elisabeth was the third of eight children. Her siblings included: Saint Kinga, Anne of Hungary, Constance, Queen of Bohemia, Stephen V of Hungary, Saint Margaret of Hungary, Blessed Jolenta and Béla of Slavonia. Elisabeth's sister, Anna was their father's favourite daughter, Béla was his favourite son although not heir.

Elisabeth had many nieces and nephews. Her sister, Jolenta was mother of Elisabeth, Duchess of Legnica and Jadwiga, Queen consort of Poland.

Jadwiga was mother of: Kunigunde, Duchess of Świdnica, Casimir III the Great and Elisabeth, Queen of Hungary.

Elisabeth's paternal grandparents were Andrew II of Hungary and his first wife, Gertrude of Merania. Her maternal grandparents were Theodore I Laskaris and his first wife Anna Komnena Angelina.

Marriage

Elisabeth and her sister were all to marry well. Elisabeth married in 1250 [1] to Henry XIII, Duke of Bavaria. The couple were married for twenty one years and had ten children:

Elisabeth died 1271 and was outlived by her husband and was also outlived by eight of her twelve children. Elisabeth is buried st Kloster Seligenthal.
